Apprenticeship Program
Application Requirements and Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet clear criteria to ensure they are ready for the commitment of the apprenticeship. Below are the basic requirements and prerequisites for the Black Orchid program (aligned with industry standards):
Minimum Age: Must be 18+ in order to apply.
Education: High school diploma or GED is preferred. A strong foundation in basic communication and math skills is helpful for client service and managing appointments.
Passion and Professionalism: A deep passion for barbering and grooming is essential. We look for well-presented individuals who are enthusiastic about learning the craft and fitting into a team. A sense of humor is welcome (we love to laugh), but a professional attitude is a must.
Legal Right to Work: Applicants must have valid identification and, if required, a Social Security Number or taxpayer ID (Employment eligibility is necessary since apprentices will be paid employees from day one)
Experience: No prior barbering experience is required. This is an entry-level training program. Prior customer service or salon experience can be a plus, but the program is designed to teach all necessary skills from the ground up. What matters is a willingness to learn and a strong work ethic.
Physical Stamina: Barbering is active work – applicants should be able to stand on their feet for long periods and perform tasks that require dexterity (e.g. using clippers, scissors).
Application Materials: A completed application form provided by Black Orchid via our partner, Atarashii.
Interview & Aptitude Assessment: We require all candidates to shadow at two different locations for a minimum of 2-hours before a formal interview. Short-listed candidates will participate in an in-person interview. We use this to assess communication skills, attitude, and passion. There may also be a basic skills or aptitude test (for example, a simple hair-parting or tool-handling exercise) to ensure the candidate has fundamental coordination and isn’t completely terrified of sharp objects (Don’t worry – no advanced skills expected; it’s mostly to see your comfort level.)
References: (Optional) Candidates may submit references or letters of recommendation (e.g. a teacher, employer, or community leader who can vouch for their character and work ethic). This is not strictly required but can strengthen an application.
Note: Black Orchid Barbers is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes diversity. We value community and believe a diverse team better serves our clientele. Applications are evaluated on character, cultural fit, and eagerness to grow, not just on paper qualifications.
About the Program:
Black Orchid Barbers is now accepting applications for our Apprenticeship Program – a hands-on, 18-month training journey to launch your barbering career. Train with Indiana’s finest (and funniest) barbers and get paid while you learn.
Why Choose Black Orchid’s Apprenticeship?
Real Experience: From day one, you’ll be working in our busy shop, not just sitting in a classroom. Learn by doing, side-by-side with expert barbers who share tricks of the trade.
One-on-One Mentorship: You’ll be paired with a Journeymen – your personal coach to guide you, give feedback, and yes, hand you a broom when it’s time to sweep. (Humility builds greatness!)
Earn While You Learn: This is a paid apprenticeship – no tuition fees. You’ll start earning a paycheck from the get-go as you build your skills.
License-Ready Training: Our curriculum covers all the cuts, shaves, and theory you need to pass the state licensing exam. Complete 1500+ hours of training and you’ll be prepared to ace the test and earn your professional license (our program meets or exceeds state requirements)..
Career Opportunities: Finish the program and receive a Certificate of Completion plus a shot at a chair in our shop. We’re grooming our future staff – show us you’ve got the chops (and chops… as in mutton chops) and there could be a job offer waiting.
Community & Culture: Join the Black Orchid family. We’re a community-focused barbershop that believes in giving back and lifting others up. Apprentices will participate in community events (free haircut days, charity drives, etc.) as part of their training. You won’t just learn to cut hair; you’ll learn to care for the community.
Fun Environment: We take our craft seriously, but not ourselves. Expect a lot of laughs and a supportive crew. Our motto isn’t “Great Haircuts, Bad Advice” for nothing – we believe in keeping the shop atmosphere light and welcoming for everyone. (Yes, you might hear some good-natured jokes at your expense, but you’ll give as good as you get by the end!)
WHO SHOULD Apply?:
Aspiring barbers age 18+ who are hungry to learn. No experience required – just a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and passion for mastering the barbering craft. If you daydream about clipper techniques and enjoy making people feel great about themselves, this is for you! Diversity is welcome – whether you’re fresh out of school or looking to change careers, as long as you’re committed, we’ll give you a serious look.
